At MedAfford Global Benefit we have many roles though attention to our client and their interest and well-being is our first and foremost responsibility. We help answer client’s questions as well as help obtain information on specific medical conditions. We know the hospitals and clinics and are constantly looking for potential issues and give that feedback to the doctors and facilities alike. We are always asking them questions and have open and honest negotiations with them. At MedAfford Global Benefit, our experience allows us to anticipate potential issues before they actualize. We know what to look for and what questions to ask. Additionally, it is important that patients understand that we know how the local systems work and thus we can usually resolve any issue quickly, something an individual traveler would likely be unable to do. At MedAfford Global Benefit we have found that one of the biggest issues for patients is communication. Though our doctors and much of their staffs speak very good English, we’ve discovered that most issues arise from simple language/cultural differences and misunderstandings. At MEDAFFORD GLOBAL BENEFIT we both speak the language and understand the culture allowing us to properly communicate and mediate between patients and medical staff. We consider this one of our most important roles. Who is using medical tourism? People consider leaving their home country for medical care for a number of reasons though the principle reasons are cost and accessibility. Due to the substantial cost savings, an increasing number of people are having major medical and dental procedures done abroad. The reasons for this is that many people either do not have insurance, have insurance with limited coverage or pre-existing conditions or are simply not covered by insurance. Others consider medical tourism because they are seeking medical procedures that are not available in their home country. Others travel abroad because the wait for receiving the medical care in the nationalized system is too long or has been denied to them. When faced with the need for major dental work, orthopedic, bariatric or other major surgeries, many people have traveled abroad to get the care they need and could not afford or get back home. Typically, when one travels abroad for medical care, including recovery time, they have found about a 50% or more savings compared to what one would pay back home. Does MedAfford Global Benefit provide medical advice or opinions? MedAfford Global Benefit does not provide medical advice or opinions of any kind whatsoever. What is the normal difference in the cost of medical and dental care between the United States and abroad? The Medical Tourism experience is comprised of two components – the cost of medical care and travel costs. The difference in the cost of high-quality medical care between North America and Costa Rica is normally 50% to 75%. Additionally, the more expensive the medical procedure is in the United States, typically the greater the cost difference. Travel costs vary by where a client originates but will include a Destination Coordinator, ground transportation, lodging as well as other services. Why choose Costa Rica? Historically, Costa Rica has had a very strong public healthcare system with many physicians and hospital administrators that were trained and/or have worked in the US prior to working in Costa Rica. More recently, the private healthcare sector in Costa Rica has begun to develop rapidly now boasting three JCI (Joint Commission International) accredited hospitals. Additionally, there are a number of high-quality clinics and out-patient providers particularly in the dental area. These private medical providers in Costa Rica are staffed with excellent physicians and run by experienced managers. These facilities have also maintained a strong link to the United States. In addition, the Government of Costa Rica, through the Ministries of Health and Tourism, has actively supported the development of medical tourism by actively developing programs that result in a positive experience for the medical tourist. Finally, MedAfford Global Benefit management team has lived and worked in the healthcare industry in general and in Costa Rica for many years. We have also kept active in the US healthcare industry and the needs and demands of US clients. MedAfford Global Benefit website contains the most common medical and dental procedures requested by medical tourists though by no means is it a complete list of medical services provided by the MEDAFFORD GLOBAL BENEFIT Network. Should you have a specific medical need that is not listed on our website, please contact MedAfford Global Benefit for more information. How did MedAfford Global Benefit select the medical centers in its Network? MedAfford Global Benefit selected its Network medical centers based upon a number of criteria. These criteria included a review of their international, domestic, clinical and service credentials; the credentials of the physicians their outcome history as well as their experience in working with overseas patients. All of our Costa Rican hospitals are JCI (Joint Commission International) accredited and all of our physicians have excelled in their specialties. In addition, MedAfford Global Benefit management has personally conducted site visits to all of the medical centers and facilities that participate in our Network. Some of the principle factors that we reviewed on-site were the credentials of the physicians, the use of technology and the modernity of the laboratory and diagnostic equipment. Will I be able to communicate in English with my physician and hospital staff? In Costa Rica, English is widely spoken and this is even more present in the medical community. All of the medical and dental providers in the MedAfford Global Benefit Network have English speaking staffs that cater to overseas patients. This staff is available throughout all stages of patient contact. Additionally, a bilingual MedAfford Global Benefit case manager will always be available. How will I be able to review the qualifications of my treating physician? One of MedAfford Global Benefit main services is to provide you with information on the physician that you selected. This information will include a profile of your physician’s education, training, certification and experience. Should I inform my local physician that I intend to receive medical care overseas? MedAfford Global Benefit strongly recommends that you inform your treating physician that you are considering receiving medical care abroad. If needed, MedAfford Global Benefit will facilitate correspondence between your physician in your home country and the Costa Rican physician that you have selected to perform your medical or dental procedure. How will I correspond with my physician prior to departure? We will assist you in communicating with your physician. Initial communication is typically in the form of a telephone call with further communication usually taking place by email, fax and/or telephone. Can I bring along a family member or companion? Yes! At MedAfford Global Benefit we encourage medical tourists to travel with a companion. We have found that when our clients travel with a companion, they are much more relaxed know that in addition to MedAfford Global Benefit there is someone else there to help care for them and their interests. How long will I need to recuperate before it is safe to fly home? Your recovery time is dependent upon your medical procedure. You will be advised of your expected recuperation time prior to your departure and your treating physician will advise you when you can safely fly after your surgery. Can I take a vacation or recuperate at a tourist destination? Yes. Your physician will advise you when it is appropriate to take a vacation or if you can recuperate at a tourist destination. Costa Rica has many beautiful destinations and MedAfford Global Benefit will assist you in making your post-surgical travel arrangements. What should I do if I need follow up care when I return home?
As stated above, MedAfford Global Benefit recommends that you inform your treating physician at home that you will be receiving medical care abroad. It is very important that your physician be aware of your upcoming medical care so that you can receive any needed follow-up care upon your return. Additionally, your Costa Rican provider will be available to answer any questions that may arise after your return home.
