Gum surgery is necessary on many patients who have dental implants and exposed tooth roots. The most common form of gum surgery is a gingival graft, wherein a doctor grafts gum tissue around a tooth that needs more support. Gum surgery is often performed along with dental implant and dental bone graft procedures, but it can be performed as a stand-alone operation as well. The tissue used for gum grafts can be harvested from the patient's palate. Dental surgeons may also use Alloderm, a brand of sterile graft tissue. In the US, gum surgery can cost up to $2,500, and £1,500 in the UK. Patients can save money by finding a skilled and experienced dental surgeon abroad.
In Costa Rica and Mexico, dentists can perform gum surgery for $300 or £200. Dental procedures are common and very affordable throughout Latin America, and patients will have no trouble finding a qualified doctor with excellent credentials. Many periodontal surgeons and dentists study medicine in the US and UK, and most dentists speak English. If the patient opts for gum surgery using pre-made graft tissue, he can rest assured that the doctor will use the same material that is used in the US and UK. Gum surgery lasts only a few hours and patients can leave the clinic the same day. The dentist will check on the patient several days later to make sure the gums are healing well.
