Lap band surgery is a weight loss operation in which a bariatric surgeon inserts an inflatable tube around the top part of the stomach so that the passage of food is restricted. This helps obese patients eat less, thereby helping them lose weight. Obesity surgeries, particularly lap band surgery, can save patients' lives since excess weight can lead to fatal health problems. During lap band surgery, the doctor uses very small incisions to insert the band and inflate it with saline. The lap band includes a port that is sutured into the skin so that the doctor can inflate the tube with precision, giving the patient the best level of restriction. Lap banding is quite expensive in the US and UK, with prices starting at $30,000 or £25,000. Abroad, doctors can perform the surgery for much less.
In Mexico, Argentina, and Costa Rica, lap band surgery only costs around $9,000 or £6,000. Bariatric surgeons in Latin America study medicine in some of the best schools in the US and Europe, and doctors are skilled and experienced. Patients will find plenty of compassionate and expert doctors to choose from, and hospitals are equipped with the most modern instruments and imaging devices. Recovery time is several days or several weeks depending on the patient's condition. While the patient is recuperating, the surgeon will perform many follow-up tests to ensure the lap band is functioning correctly and staying in place. Food and lodging are inexpensive, so patients can stay longer if necessary.
